It was only fitting Drew Brees would break the all-time passing yardage record at home in the Superdome.

It was only fitting it would happen in the first half.

It was only fitting it would happen on a long pass for a touchdown.

It was only fitting it would happen on Monday Night Football.

And it was only fitting it would happen in a Saints' win.

Brees' record night led the Saints to a 43-19 rout over the Washington Redskins at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome Monday night.

Brees' 62 yard touchdown pass to Tre'Quan Hill with just under three minutes to play in the first half catapulted him past Peyton Manning into the record books.  The score put the Saints on top 26-6

The Saints scored on their first possession on a two yard run by Mark Ingram.  Brees hit Michael Thomas for a first down and Ingram took a screen pass down to the two before running it in.  Wil Lutz missed the extra point.

Washington drove deep into Saints' territory with their next possession, but Sheldon Rankins got a big sack on Alex Smith, forcing a field goal attempt to make the score 6-3.

The Saints then drove the length of the field and scored on a pass from Brees to Josh Hill, giving the Saints a 13-3 lead. The drive was kept alive after the Redskins' Montae Nicholson was flagged for unnecessary roughness after a third round stop.  Brees passed Brett Favre for second place on the all time yardage list on that drive.

Dustin Hopkins hit a 53 yard field goal on the next possession for Washington to cut the Saints' lead to 13-6.

The Saints drove 75 yards in ten plays with Ingram scoring his second touchdown of the night.  A 52 yard reception by Cam Meredith was the highlight of the drive.  Lutz' extra point made the score 20-6 with 3:43 to play in the first half.

Following the touchdown that broke the record, the Saints' fumbled and Washington recovered and that enabled them to get on the board with an Alex Smith run for a touchdown to make the score 26-13 at the half.

Brees hit Smith again in the first drive of the second half for his third touchdown of the night, making the score 33-13.  It was the 499th touchdown pass of Brees' career.

Justin Hardee intercepted Smith on the next possession and returned it to the Washington 4 yard line.  Taysom Hill scored the touchdown from a yard out to make the score 40-13 with 6:43 left in the third quarter.

The Saints added another score on a 44 yard Lutz field goal early in the fourth quarter to increase the Saints' lead to 30 points, 43-13.

Washington scored with 10:25 remaining on a one yard touchdown run by Kapri Bibbs.  The two point conversion was no good and the Saints' lead was 43-19.

Brees was removed from the game with 2:00 left to a standing ovation.  He finished the night 26-29 for 363 yards and three touchdowns.  Ingram carried 16 times for 53 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  Smith was 23-39 for 279 yards and an interception.
