First Look at Tom Hardy as Al Capone in ‘Fonzo’
It’s not a far stretch to imagine Tom Hardy playing Al Capone. The Brit’s played a handful of violent criminals, from his ruthless gangster twins in Legend to his massively terrifying Charles Bronson in Nicolas Winding Refn’s film. Portraying the most infamous mobster of all time just makes sense.
That said, one would hope Hardy would transform a bit to embody the physicality of the iconic crime boss. Hardy shared the first photo of himself as Capone in Josh Trank’s upcoming biopic, Fonzo, and he looks a lot like, well, himself:
The photo is fine, but Hardy, couldn’t you dream a little bigger, darling? He doesn’t exactly evoke ruthless crime boss, except for the signature Al Capone hat. Maybe it’s because he’s sporting what looks like a prison jumpsuit and we haven’t seen his full mobster getup yet. That makes sense, as Fonzo follows Capone after years spent in prison. But still, Hardy is a toned and muscley dude, while Capone on the other hand, was fairly hefty, especially around the cheeks. Perhaps Hardy should’ve pulled a Christian Bale-as-Dick-Cheney and put on a few extra pounds. Luckily though, Hardy will be sporting the gangster’s iconic scar:
Fonzo, written and directed by Trank, depicts the Chicago mobster at the age of 47, “following nearly a decade of imprisonment [when] dementia rots Capone’s mind, and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life,” according to THR. The biopic also stars Linda Cardellini as Capone’s wife Mae, Matt Dillon as his closest friend Johnny, Kyle MacLaclan as the mobster’s doctor, and Sopranos alum Kathrine Narducci will play Capone’s sister. No word yet on a release date.
