Michael Phelps won his 23rd gold medal in his final race as an Olympian, as the United States won the 4X100 Individual Medley at the XXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro.

Phelps, swimming the butterfly leg, turned a 0.6 deficit into a 0.7 lead leading into the final leg of the race.  Ryan Murphy, swimming the leadoff leg, the backstroke, set a world record and the team set a new Olympic record in the race.  Great Britain won the silver, while Australia took the bronze

The US Women's team also won the 4X100 individual medley as Kathleen Baker, Dana Vollmer, Lilly King and Simone Manuel won the 1,000th Olympic medal for team USA.  Australia won the silver and Denmark took the bronze.

Earlier, Manuel took the silver in the 50m freestyle, missing on a gold medal by 0:02, being out-touched by Denmark's Pernille Blume.  Blume had been known more by her glamour pictures, but surprised many in the field by taking the gold medal.

Connor Frazier got on the medal stand for the first time in his Olympic career, winning the silver in the men's 1500 meters.

On the track, Jamaica continued its dominance in the women's 100 meters as Elaine Thompson won the gold medal.  Tori Bowie of the US won the silver, while two time defending champion Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica won the bronze.

Jeffrey Henderson won the gold medal for the US in the Long Jump with a distance of 8.38 meters, just edging out Luvo Manyonga of South Africa.
