Get your crawfish pots out! Last season wasn't all that great for crawfish...this season, farmers have a more optimistic outlook!

A dry summer helped them in planting of rice in their fields. The algae that grow on the rice are what feed that crawfish. A warm fall gave the crawfish the energy to eat more. These are the two basic things that make for some good size, and good tasting crawfish.

From NBC 33 TV:

"I think the crawfish are going to be beautiful this year," said James Cantrelle, a crawfish farmer in Lafourche Parish. "They look good; you have pictures of them. We're doing a good crop. It's real early, but it looks very good. Promising."

Currently the retail price for crawfish is right around $5 per pound. Wholesale is at $4 per pound.

If that seems pricey to you, don't worry. Cantrelle says that prices are going to drop. But of course, he's happy because people want them right now, and they sell everything they catch. And that's not even enough for the demand.
