The Night Planet Radio Stole Christmas – A Show To Remember [Review]

Oh and what a merry time it was the night Planet Radio stole Christmas.

The line of naughty Planetary Citizens that went out to see Mutemath and Royal Teeth stretched almost to Johnston Street.

Inside Outlaws, the excitement for the show weighed on the entire room. Fans of both bands showed their anxious anticipation on their faces as the venue began to fill. When Royal Teeth finally took the stage, the room exploded with energy.

Though I've never seen live music at Outlaws, I was impressed. The stage, lighting, and sound was top notch all the way through. The shows also featured surprise additions like confetti explosions and smoke machines that brought the already raucous crowd to another level. Spectators had the option of taking in the show in the middle of the action on the large dance floor directly below the stage, or to sit at one of the many tables surrounding the area.

Royal Teeth started the evening off the way every opening act should, bringing high energy to the stage that resonated throughout the building. The band proved once again why they are Lafayette's current "it" band, winning over many new fans with their infectious melodies and soulful harmonies. When their short set was finished, the crowed exploded in appreciation. Then, it was time for the headliner.

Mutemath entered the building like they were shot out of cannon. Making their way to the stage through the crowed in a marching band like procession, they grabbed the crowd’s attention and never let go. Their screaming guitars, teamed with an absolute machine of a drummer, laying down intricate dance beats, mixed with beautiful ranging vocals absolutely brought the house down.

All the citizens were happy. All the citizens wanted more.

The climax of the evening for me was when Mutemath’s lead singer Paul Meany, in a rock 'n' roll move I've never seen before, dawned two large green foam shoes, and began walking out into the crowd. Supported by the outstretched arms of the patrons, he then laid out and crowd-surfed while still managing to deliver pitch perfect vocals to the awestruck crowd.

As the evening came to a close, two things were clear: Both bands brought their "A" game, and Planet Radio knows how to throw a party.
