14-year-old Cameron Tillman was shot and killed by a Terrebonne deputy Tuesday night (9/23).

The story is making national headlines, as police were called to an abandoned house after a reported break-in, and a deputy shot and killed the 14-year-old.

Police say two deputies responded to a break in at the abandoned house, and reported five male subjects had entered the house armed with handguns. While attempting to make contact with the suspects inside, a deputy shot and killed an armed suspect.

Police say a gun was found "in close proximity" to Tillman's body. Conflicting reports have been given if they believe that Tillman was wielding the weapon when he was shot.

According to Tillman's brother, Andre, who was there with Tillman and three others:

“My little brother thought somebody was just clowning, because somebody is always clowning by the door,” said Andre Tillman. “He opened, and the man just shot him. He didn’t have nothing in his hand.”

His relatives said he was too timid to even confront police, much less point a gun at an officer.

One of Tillman's high school teachers, Michael Lagarde, considered him a son. Lagarde also said that he recently tried to purchase the abandoned house as rental property, and that there was nothing in the house, so there was "no way" that Tillman and his friends were burglarizing the house.

The officer who shot and killed Tillman has not been named, but it has been said that he is a 7 year veteran, and, like Tillman, is African American.
