It takes a certain mindset to survive life on the road, and Tenacious D may have just found the perfect roadie. In the group’s latest video, ‘The Roadie,’ none other than ‘Eastbound and Down’ star Danny McBride comes to the duo in their hour of need as Sebastian, the seemingly ultimate stage tech.

His qualifications are almost as impressive as his braided chin beard, as he lists off Van Halen, Metallica, AC/DC and ‘The Ice Capades’ as his past employers. Tenacious D members JB and KG are willing to overlook his “pyro” trick gone wrong when he starts dazzling them with his talk of lasers. And once he admits to being ten years sober, a deal is struck and the boys are inspired, so much so that they actually write a song to play about their latest employee called ‘The Roadie.’

With lyrics like, “The roadie looks a thousand miles with his eyes / And when the crowd roars, it brings a teardrop to the roadie’s eyes / Tears of pride, because they brought you the show, but you will never know / Because he’s changing the strings while hiding in the wings / No matter how high, the show must go on,” Tenacious D capture the experience of the guys behind the scenes. But poor Sebastian has a few demons that come to the forefront on his first night back at work, and his tenure with “the D” is short-lived.

‘The Roadie’ is just the latest video to use the band’s connections. ‘To Be the Best’ featured pals Dave Grohl, Josh Groban, Tim Robbins, Jimmy Kimmel, and Val Kilmer [R.I.P. Val, thanks to you, the D lives on] making cameos. And for some green screen fun gone awry, check out the recent clip for the title track, ‘Rize of the Fenix.’

Speaking of the road, Tenacious D will be back on the stage later this month. They start a brief jaunt May 23 at the Santa Barbara Bowl and concluding May 28 at the Sasquatch Festival in George, Wash. After a trip overseas, the duo will return stateside for shows beginning June 23 at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium and keeping them on tour through the end of July. Their album, ‘Rize of the Fenix,’ arrives May 15.
