Silverchair Frontman Daniel Johns Covers ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ [Video]
Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns finally covered 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', and it will give you chills.
Silverchair's debut album, Frogstomp, will turn 20 in March. Many people shouted about Daniel Johns looking like a young Kurt Cobain when they hit the scene back in '95, including Courtney Love. To my extensive Silverchair knowledge, neither Johns nor Silverchair ever covered 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'...until now!
Last week, at Triple J's 40th birthday celebrations, Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett introduced Johns to a crowd of 25,000 people. He sang one song. And that's all he had to do.
Nearly 4 years after he put his band on an 'indefinite hibernation', it seems Daniel Johns is back!
It's probably not the take on it that you think it is. Especially if you didn't listen to Silverchair's last two albums, Diorama and Young Modern. Definitely not straight forward. It's a rather slow, stripped down, haunting, and, I'll say, strange version of the song of a generation. His falsetto is damn near unmatched! Check out the nearly 7 minute rendition of Daniel Johns' cover of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'.
If you're interested, Johns' social media team posted a kinda-sorta cryptic message just before he went onstage to do this song. It's been said that he has had a solo album in the works for the last three years. On Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and his website, this picture, or a variation of it, was posted.
Some speculate this to be the title of his solo album, and the release date. Others think it's the first single off of his new solo album, and the date it will be released. I guess we'll find out on January 29th!
