I know that Silverchair hasn't been a prominent force in the US for a few years, but they are my personal favorite band. So, it's quite a sad moment to announce that I received a letter in my inbox this morning from the fan club (which has since been posted on their official site) announcing that Silverchair are in an 'indefinite hibernation'. I'll go ahead and give you my top 6 songs from the past 16 years :(

While this doesn't necessarily mean that they're gone for good, it's definitely going to be awhile, if ever, that we hear new Silverchair music. Here's a piece of what they had to say in their letter. You can read the whole letter HERE

"We formed Silverchair nearly 20 years ago when we were just 12 years old. Today we stand by the same rules now as we did back then ... if the band stops being fun and if it's no longer fulfilling creatively, then we need to stop.

Therefore after much soul searching we wanted to let you know that we're putting Silverchair into "indefinite hibernation" and we've decided to each do our own thing for the foreseeable future.

We assure you that this decision has not been taken lightly. In fact we've been struggling with it for quite a while now.

Back in 2009 we went into the studio to start work on a record. Initially things were going well and as a result we did some shows in 2010 to maintain creative momentum. However, over the months that followed in the studio it became clear to us that we were moving in different directions. Despite our best efforts over the last year or so, it's become increasingly clear that the spark simply isn't there between the three of us at the moment."

They've kind of done this before, they've just never made an announcement about it. Daniel Johns (singer/guitar player/songwriter) is a freaking genius, so I have no doubt he's going to go on to make great music. But there was just something about the three of them together that made it that much better. Let's hope that one day they'll reconvene, and blow our minds! Here's my top 6  Silverchair songs  from the past 16 years.

Israel's Son - While 'Tomorrow' was their breakout hit, this song was a definite stand out. And remember...They were only FIFTEEN when this came out!

Freak - The hit from their sophomore album 'Freak Show' showed a slight change, and was still a song they played for the fans even in their later years.

Emotion Sickness - From 'Neon Ballroom', while they had two other hits in 'Ana's Song' and 'Anthem for the Year 2000' this showed the change that was to come in their later work. David Helfgott played piano on this song (He was the basis for the Oscar winning performance in Shine from Geoffrey Rush).

Straight Lines - Look! They're all growed up! This was a mild hit in the US from their last album 'Young Modern'. The whole album is great, but this is the one you might remember. It still gets me pumped up in the mornings!

Across The Night - From 'Diorama'. This album, IMO, is Silverchair's masterpiece. This is the first track off of their album. The song is beautiful, and the video is great! Actor Guy Pierce even makes a cameo in this one!

Tuna In The Brine - From 'Diorama'. While 'Diorama' was their masterpiece, 'Tuna in the Brine' is the epitome of greatness all wrapped into one song. They never did an official video, but I had to include this song. So, here's a live version. Still great!

I will miss you, Silverchair! Come back sooner, rather than later!!!
