Louisiana and mountain are the two words you probably never thought you would put together.

Seeing that Louisiana is one of three states that have areas that are below sea level, one wouldn't think that we might have a mountain in our great state. Turns out we DO have a mountain!

    Driskill Mountain

Yes, Louisiana does have a mountain. Driskill Mountain, aka Mount Driskill, is the highest point in Louisiana, coming at 535 ft. above sea level. Our highest point is the third lowest in the country.

Driskill Mountain is located a little over 5 miles south of Bryceland, La. in Bienville Parish. A large pile of rocks located atop the mountain marks the highest point.

The mountain is named after James Driskill who moved his family to Louisiana from Georgia in 1859. He bought the land that Mount Driskill was located on. Some of his descendants still live in the area.

After climbing the mountain, you can sign the logbook located in an army box.

    Gentry Hill

Gentry Hill is located near Driskill Mountain. It stands at 524 ft. above sea level near Arcadia, La. Gentry Hill is the second highest peak in Louisiana.

Seeing that this is only a few feet lower than Driskill Mountain, and it's so near, it might make for a good two-fer if you're wanting to get a good mountain climb workout in.

    LaBorde Lookout

LaBorde Lookout is on top of "The Mountain." If you're familiar with local happenings in New Orleans, you may have thought that Monkey Hill was the highest point in New Orleans. Turns out, it's not!

LaBorde Lookout is located in Couturie Forest, which is in City Park in New Orleans.

The trail leading to the lookout has education stations. There are signs leading you to "The Mountain." Once you get to the top of it, you're at LaBorde Lookout, which is made up of a deck, and a wooden bench.

The lookout isn't much of one, due to the forest surrounding it. You can't really tell how high you are. The answer is 53 ft.

    Monkey Hill

Monkey Hill is the "legendary" highest point in New Orleans. Of course, we learned from the previous entry that it's actually LaBorde Lookout. Monkey Hill would probably be more exciting to check out though!

Monkey Hill is a man-made hill located inside of the Audubon Zoo. It was built in the 1930's to show the children of oh so flat New Orleans what a hill looks like...no, for real.

In the early 21st century, Monkey Hill underwent extensive renovations. Added were a slide, bronze lion sculptures, wading pools, and a 5-level tree house to give people a "monkey eye view" of the zoo.

There is still plenty of room to roll down Monkey Hill as well.
