More Winter Weather On It’s Way To Acadiana

Looks like Mother Nature has more snow, sleet, and freezing rain in store for Acadiana this week. As of now, we have no information on possible school and road closures or if there might be any, but we'll definitely let you know the second we hear anything.

As we get ready to start another week it seems the "once in a decade storm" we saw on Friday will actually be a "twice in less then a week storm". Another round of winter weather is expected to move through on Tuesday bringing another mix of snow/sleet/freezing rain to south Louisiana.

As of Sunday evening a cold front is moving across the country and will be sweeping across Acadiana early Monday morning. This will bring with it a round of light scattered showers for Monday's morning commute followed by winds that will be blowing around 15-24 mph in the afternoon.

This front will stall off the coast and will open up the region to tap into Gulf moisture that will be pooling along the front. As bitterly cold air moves in late Monday night it will interact with this moisture and we will get our next round of winter weather.

What the models are indicating now is that for parishes between the coast and I-10 will start the day on Tuesday with a mixture of sleet and freezing rain, while once again the central parishes (Avoyelles, Rapides, Vernon, and the north half of Evangeline Parish) will deal with predominantly snowfall.

Since temperatures are unlikely to get above freezing on Tuesday eventually the ground will become cold enough for snowflakes to make it to the surface, and the sleet/freezing rain mix will become snow late Tuesday afternoon.

This event will likely go on all day Tuesday, not really clearing up until the early morning hours of Wednesday. Accumulation of snow and ice looks like it could be around 1-2" of snow with the higher amounts in north Acadiana, and the potential for a quarter inch of ice as of Sunday afternoon, but those number will likely change as we get closer to the event. Regardless the National Weather Service has gone ahead and pulled the trigger on a Winter Storm WATCH for late Monday night until late Tuesday night.

This winter storm will be followed by bone chilling cold and temperatures will likely fall into the low 20s/upper teens Tuesday night. Those with exposed pipes may want to make sure that they are properly insulated and plants should definitely be covered.

Wind chill values will be in the teens so make sure that you are dressed appropriately and try to avoid extended periods outside if you can. As of Sunday night there have been no announced closures but be sure to stick with KATC in case things change. Please be mindful of what authorities are saying in regards to the roads and if they start to freeze over avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary.
