The crack of twenty-one guns firing in salute of a fallen hero, the image of a meticulously folded flag being presented to a grieving family, the last fading haunting notes of Taps as played by a solitary bugler, these are all images that I pray will pass through your mind this weekend as America pauses to remember those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

For many of us, those solemn images will be crowded out by trips to the beach, burgers on a grill, and the smell of tanning oil around the pool. While there is nothing wrong with enjoying some time off from work, there is something wrong if you don't realize why we commemorate Memorial Day.

For its 55th year, Greenlawn Memorial Gardens and Cemetery will hold Memorial Day ceremonies to enlighten, educate, and ensure that the memory of America's fallen war dead is honored in a respectful way.

Ceremonies at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery are scheduled for Monday, May 27th at Noon. The event will take place inside the air-conditioned Walters Funeral Home. The featured speaker at the event will be James Bollich, WW II U.S. Army Prisoner of War survivor of the Bataan Death March in the Philippines.

While I do wish for you a peaceful Memorial Day Weekend, I do hope you will reflect on the reasons we have that peace to celebrate. It was given to us by the men and women of America's military who paid for it with their blood on battlefields around the world.
