Work has officially begun on a major road and bridge renovation for the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge. The project will run on Interstate 10 from LA 347 (Henderson/Cecilia exit) to LA 77 in Grosse Tete.

Construction will run day and night with hopes of the project being completed by June 2019, according to DOTD spokesperson Rodney Mallet.

"They're going to be repainting the steel structures on the bridge replacing the barriers on the side where they've been hit and damaged, joint repairs, and they're going to do some repairs on the bridge deck area."

The project will cost 18 million dollars.

Mallet says this area is in dire need of fixing, as years of wear and tear along with recent wrecks have damaged crucial pieces of the route.

"It's a long stretch and there's a lot of work that needs to be done. That bridge like many of our bridges and a lot of our infrastructure is old and needs some rehab."

You can expect the most disruptive periods at night, as some lane closures are expected during the process. However, Mallet says that there will always be a two week notice of such closures.
