What if you were in a situation that you needed your driver's license, and you could just pull up an app on your phone? That could become a reality here in Louisiana!

The House Transportation Committee passed a bill that would give drivers an option to be able to pull up their license through an app instead of having a physical license on them.

Stacy White, Deputy Commissioner with the Office of Motor Vehicles, said, "It’s not the same thing as taking a picture of you [sic] license. It actually is a reflection of what’s actually on our database at that moment in time. It’s just an option if they choose to utilize it.”

Baton Rouge Representative Denise Marcelle supports the bill because it's the way the world is changing.

“It’s following the lead of the insurance cards. Everybody’s going to digital. Also with your airport boarding passes, everything’s going to the phone,” said Marcelle.

State officials say the app would cost $5, which is the same as renewing your license.

The one thing, though, is that the app wouldn't necessarily replace your physical license in every situation.

“You would have to have that physical license on your person, if the establishment you’re visiting still requires it, such as a casino or buying alcohol,” White said.

The House floor will take a look at the bill next.
