‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ International Titles Clear Up Some Confusion
When Lucasfilm initially revealed Star Wars: The Last Jedi as the full title for Episode VIII, rampant nerdy speculation ensued over what it might mean. Since “Jedi” could be either singular or plural, the title of Rian Johnson’s upcoming sequel implied a few possibilities — Luke could (obviously) be the last Jedi, or maybe it’s Rey, or maybe it’s both of them (and maybe others?). Thanks to the official international titles for the film, and a little assistance from social media, we now have an answer.
OK, it’s a partial answer, but it does clear up that plural vs. singular confusion. /Film received a tweet regarding the Portuguese title for the new Star Wars sequel, which uses the plural form of Jedi:
Via Twitter and Facebook, several more fans pointed out that the Spanish, French, German and Italian titles for The Last Jedi also use the plural form. So there you have it. The Last Jedi refers to more than one, which means that Luke isn’t the only remaining Jedi. You may recall that a dying Yoda told Luke that he would be the last, and even the opening crawl for The Force Awakens refers to Luke as the last Jedi — unsurprisingly, that’s no longer the case.
We’ve already seen Rey’s Force skills on display (as well as Kylo Ren’s), and her strange experience in the treasure room beneath Maz Kanata’s castle certainly suggested that she’s connected to the Force in some way. Seems like The Last Jedi will give us more answers on that front.
Sure, sure, this isn’t that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things, but it’s one less thing to speculate about in the months to come.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15.
