A Lafayette community coalition is laying the ground work for a change in the law that will keep anyone under the age of 21 out of bars.

The Knowledge Effect coalition did research that linked people aged 18,19, and 20 to higher crime rates. Their findings say that people those ages are responsible for 27% of all offenses reported in and around Lafayette bars from January 2011 to May 2014. These were in the instances that the age of the offender was known.

It was also found that drivers under the age of 21 accounted for an average of 13 percent of annual DWI arrests in the city from 2006 to 2013.

Currently there is no proposal to change the law. The coalition is trying to raise community awareness on the matter in hopes that there will eventually be a change in the law.

Should people 18-20 be allowed in bars in Lafayette?
