Anchor store JC Penney in Acadiana Mall is closing for good. The company is closing 154 locations nationwide and the Acadiana Mall location will be included in the first round of closers. JC Penny will close three JC Penny locations in Louisiana immediately in the first phase, all remaining Louisiana stores will be closed at a later date.

JC Penny has had trouble keeping afloat financially in recent years. The company has also struggled to keep up with consumer trends and buying habits. The same thing happened to Sears. Having to close many stores due to COVID-19 was more than the legendary retailer could handle and will now use the next 10 to 16 weeks to get all 154 stores closed permanently.

On April 14, 1902, James Cash Penny opened his first store under the name Golden Rule. He opened the store in partnership with Thomas Callahan and Guy Johnson. Callahan and Johnson dissolved their partnership in 1907. By 1912, Penny had 34 stores total and in 1913 all stores were placed under the JC Penny banner.

KATC.com is reporting the affected stores will begin store closing sales on June 12.
