Crawfish Prices Down Across Louisiana, Price Jump is Expected
It's been a few weeks since Mardi Gras and most of Louisiana has settled into the Lenten Season being mindful of what could and should be on the menu depending upon the day of the week. Here in Louisiana, the days between Mardi Gras and Easter are often filled with gatherings of family and friends that include boiled crawfish.
The history of boiling and eating crawfish along Louisiana's bayous can trace its roots to long before the Cajuns and the missionaries arrived in Louisiana. The Houma Tribe of native Americans were noted crawfish fishermen long before the arrival of people from other lands in the 1700s. So, eating crawfish isn't just about nourishing the body with good food, it's about nourishing the appetites of history and tradition as well.
Back in the day, Native American fishermen would catch crawfish by attaching deer meat to a reed and then sticking that reed in the crawfish holes and waiting for a bite. In our more modern times, we rely on our smartphones to do most of the fishing.
The proprietors of The Crawfish App have some 1,650 vendors listed in their database and according to their most recent numbers, we are paying a lot less for crawfish this week than we paid last week.
According to The Crawfish App via a story published by the Louisiana Radio Network as of last Friday crawfish prices across the state were down by half a dollar. The average price for live crawfish was $2.84. If you wanted those mudbugs boiled the average price was reported to be $5.22 a pound.
Just a day earlier KATC television's Crawdaq price report, which comes out on Thursdays during the crawfish season was reporting prices in the Lafayette area were at $6.14 a pound for cooked crawfish. KPLC Television out of Lake Charles offers a similar price report but did not break down the prices they listed to an average amount. Crawfish prices have been trending downward as of late but this week consumers might see a bit of a jump in prices because of St Patrick's Day. While not nearly as big of a crawfish holiday as Good Friday is around South Louisiana there will still be a jump in demand. This could lead to a quick jump in prices for both live and cooked crawfish.
Incidentally, the Diocese of Lafayette has issued a decree saying that Catholics in the Diocese would be exempt from abstaining from eating meat and meat products on St. Patrick's Day which does fall on a Friday this year. Bishop Deshotel of the Lafayette Diocese did suggest that those who decide to eat meat on St Patrick's Day should engage in another sacrificial or charitable act on that day.
