(Maurice, Louisiana) - For years, several towns and communities across Acadiana have had to address people driving golf carts on roadways, and now one town in south Louisiana will allow its citizens to drive them on the roads.

Our media partners at KATC TV-3 report that the fast-growing town of Maurice, Louisiana, will soon allow citizens to drive golf carts on roads. However, there will be laws and limitations that those driving golf carts must follow.

The city council passed an ordinance Wednesday night at its regularly scheduled meeting that will allow residents to drive golf carts on roads with a speed limit of 25 mph or under.

In addition to following the speed limit, those driving golf carts in Maurice will not be allowed on state highways like Hwy. 92 and 167 or on Vinccenet Road for the time being.

Maurice’s Police Chief, Guy Nerren, told KATC that the majority of those at the meeting favored allowing citizens to drive their golf carts on the roads, and he reminded everyone that, as long as they obey the laws, their golf carts will not be towed.

The chief of police would add that everyone driving golf carts through town must have a driver's license, thus eliminating kids from driving them. In addition, everyone on golf carts must wear a seat belt while traveling across roads in Maurice, and all golf carts must be insured.

Chief Nerren expects there to be some issues at first, but he reminds everyone to obey the laws and stay safe while on their golf carts.

Those driving golf carts through Maurice need to remember that there are still drivers of much larger vehicles in town, and that you are much more likely to be injured while on a golf cart if you are involved in a crash.

This ordinance to alllow golf carts on the roads in Maurice will go into effect on May 1, ,2026.
