Flying Into The Eye Of Hurricane Irma [Video]
I am not very comfortable flying on an airplane in good weather. I can only imagine the kind of ride I'd be in for if I was aboard a Hurricane Hunter aircraft blasting through the eye wall of a category 5 hurricane.
This video gives us a rough idea, no pun intended, of what it's like to intentionally penetrate the central core of one of the strongest natural phenomena on Earth. What is even more amazing to me is the eerie calmness that surrounds the aircraft once it has passed into the eye of the storm.
The Hurricane Hunters fly into and through tropical storms on data gathering missions. This data is transferred back to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center. They use the information to fine tune and give more accurate forecasts so that people like you and I can make life-saving preparations ahead of the storm.
