A fake kidnapping scam has been used on at least one Acadiana family. The scammers get personal info from social media, and use it during the scam.

This morning (Feb. 6) an Acadiana family got a call that their child had been kidnapped. After calling the school, they learned their child was safe and sound.

Investigators say that callers from outside of the United States are using public profiles and "check-ins" from social media to make very specific claims of kidnapping.

They'll name a place your loved one frequents and mention them by name. They also give a bank account number to wire money to and tell you not to call police. Troopers say not only should you call law enforcement right away, you should not wire any money and you should change your settings on social media to prevent these people from getting your information.
