Big budget remakes of 80s horror classics usually tend to aggravate me. For example, two really come to mind: Friday the 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street. Those were horrible examples of remakes. When I first heard of director Sam Raimi's plan to remake The Evil Dead, I was appalled.

When the first red-band trailer was released, I started to have hope that maybe this could be a great remake. So, last night, after seeing great reviews and hearing great things about it on Facebook, I couldn't take it anymore and went to see it.

First things first, they finally got it right! This is my favorite horror remake ever, even better than the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I know, that's saying a lot. Instead of a male lead, this film revolves around the character Mia (Jane Levy) who is a cocaine addict and along with friends and her brother David, heads to the infamous family cabin in the woods to rid herself of addiction by going cold turkey.

It is through the hell of withdrawal that Mia starts to lose her mind while at the same time another character finds the Necronomicon in the basement of the cabin and recites the passage that conjures the demon that possesses the living.

As far as the story goes, I will stop there because I hate spoilers but if you are a die-hard fan of the original Evil Dead trilogy, you will find enough homages to the first two films to satisfy you including trees, a possessed hand, the magnifying necklace, the classic Oldsmobile in the yard, the double barreled shotgun and the infamous chainsaw. This remake of the Evil Dead has the most iconic chainsaw scene of all time, so be ready for that!

If you are not a fan of getting the crap scared out of you and gallons and gallons of blood and gore, then I highly do not suggest this film and recommend Raimi's 'Oz: the Great and Powerful'.

I give Evil Dead 4.5 out of 5 and if I can describe it in two words, it's "Bloody Groovy"!
