Today's Wayback Classic Track take us back to the year 1970.

Everyone knows the song 'American Woman' by The Guess Who. It's a staple in classic rock. The song first hit number one on the US charts on May 9th, 1970.

There is an interesting story on how the song was written. At a show in Ontario, guitarist Randy Bachman (also of Bachman-Turner Overdrive) broke a string. When he was re-tuning the broken string, he played a riff which became the main riff to the song.

The band loved the riff and noticed a kid recording a bootleg of the show. They asked the kid for the recording and the rest is history.
