Uber or Uber Eats in Lafayette is about to cost you more. With the national average of a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. now at almost $4.50 and expected to go higher, the company has announced a gas surcharge on rides and eats to help offset the costs for its drivers. The surcharge will go directly to drivers.

In a press release Friday, Uber and Uber Eats announced that the surcharge will stay in effect for 60 days. At the end of 60 days, they will reevaluate the situation in which time the new surcharge may go away, stay the same or be increased.

Depending on location, the temporary charge will be either 45 cents or 55 cents on each Uber ride and 35 cents to 45 cents on each Uber Eats. The new temporary surcharge will start Wednesday, March 16, 2022.

The surcharges are based off the average trip distance and the increase in gas prices in each state. Uber Press Release

The company is already getting some pushback from customers who claim Uber and Uber Eats rates are already high.

Gas prices are rising due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Experts claim the average price per gallon of regular gasoline in the U.s. could go even higher during the summer months.

The only state that will not be impacted by the higher rates is New York as Uber and Uber Eats drivers in the Big Apple just received an increase in pay.
