The UL Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns are bowl bound for the first time since the FBS started in Division I NCAA Football. They will play in the 2011 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl which will be in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on December 17th. They have yet to have an opponent for the game. It will likely be a team from Conference USA but teams like Syracuse, Purdue and Florida International are looking to play in it also.

The Ragin’ Cajuns appearance in this year’s R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl marks their first Bowl Appearance in 41 years, where they fell short of beating Tennessee State 26-25 in the 1970 Grantland Rice Bowl in Baton Rouge. ULL is currently 8-3 on the year, and in third place in the Sun Belt Conference. A nine-win campaign would be their best since 1972, when they played in the Southland Conference.

Second year Head Coach Mark Hudspeth realized the importance of his teams focus for the rest of the season, but took a break to celebrate his first Bowl selection as Head Coach with his team, “This is a great day for Ragin’ Cajun football. I am very proud for these players, students and fans to be going to a bowl game for the first time in 41 years.”
