The founding members of Toto met each other when they were studio musicians working on the same projects in the 70s. Their talents can be heard on several albums from Steely Dan, Sonny and Cher, Boz Scaggs, and many more. The band started working on their first album in 1977 after signing with Columbia Records.

The band was still unnamed after the completion of their first album. Since they worked on so many other projects and demos, drummer Jeff Porcaro would write TOTO on their demos. Bassist David Hungate saw it on the demo tapes, he explained to the rest of the band that the Latin words "in toto" translated to "all-encompassing". They thought it was a perfect fit for the name of the band seeing that they started off as studio musicians and played on so many different genres of albums.

Hear Toto's greatest hits of all time:

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
