The Real Superstore was a grocery store located at 3141 Johnston St.

The Real Superstore was once located where the Grand 16 Theatre now stands. It opened in the early 80's, and closed in the mid 90's. It became a Schwegmann's Supermarket before closing it's doors for good shortly thereafter.

One thing that many people remember (especially if they were kids back then) is that in order to get a shopping cart, you had to put in a quarter. This would then release the cart, and you could do your shopping. When it was time to leave, you would hook your shopping cart back up to the string of other carts, and get your quarter back.

Beside the quarter-tricking carts, one memory I have is that my mom and I went shopping there one time. She spent an extended amount of time looking for a king cake that still had it's frosting intact on top of the cake. After finding the ONE that still had all of it's frosting, we got to the register, and the person checking us out, only known as Henry to my little mind, went and turned the cake over in order to scan it. Needless to say, Momma wasn't happy!

The store was owned by the National Tea Company. When they went bankrupt around 1994, The Real Superstore was a superstore no longer. In fact, it wasn't even a store anymore...
