Teddy Ray Daigle, an eighth grader at Holy Family Catholic School, died after collapsing during a basketball game at First Baptist Church.

Holy Family Principal Rogers Griffin said preliminary information indicates that Daigle's death was heart-related. He was 14 years old and had no prior illnesses, Griffin said.

Daigle was playing in the basketball game when he collapsed. First responders were unable to resuscitate him at the gym. He later died at Lafayette General.

He was described as a "helpful, cheerful student who brought joy wherever he went."

"Everybody called him their baby," Griffin said.

Daigle was to play Joseph in the school's live nativity later this month.

The school will hold a vigil for Daigle Tuesday morning following the Feast of Immaculate Conception Mass.
