That One Time SNL Made Fun Of Louisiana And It Was Actually Pretty Funny [VIDEO]
Louisiana has thick skin.
From 'The Waterboy' to subtitles that appear beneath cast members on shows like 'Swamp People' and 'Duck Dynasty,' Louisiana is no stranger to being the butt of Hollywood's jokes. While the rest of the world may chuckle at jokes about swamps, gators, and New Orleans second lines most locals are left wanting more.
SNL's sketch about 'Bayou Benny's Liberal Lagniappe' fell flat for just about everyone from Louisiana who could bear to watch it. I must admit, the half-giggled at the MAGA biscuit part— but the rest of it was definitely not the best work that I've seen from a show that has struggled more than succeeded at being funny in recent times.
It's super easy to be critical, so what I chose to do was actually bring up a time where Saturday Night Live's take on Cajun(ish) Culture was actually funny. For me, the best example would be 'Maine Justice': a sketch centered around a Cajun-themed courtroom in Maine.
To quote one commenter: "I never thought someone confusing Maine with Louisiana could be so funny, but here we are."
To my knowledge, SNL has only run this bit twice, and the one featuring Jamie Foxx is definitely the funnier of the two in my opinion—mainly because of Charlie Day's character who actually kind of nailed the Louisiana "down the bayou" accent.
It should also be noted that Jason Sudeikis does a way better job at the 'Colonel Sanders meets Foghorn Leghorn' character, but I'll leave that up to you to decide.
The takeaway here is that AOC got a shout out on a pretty big stage, and like most regional stereotypes, it's not the last time we'll see people (especially Hollywood) poke fun at Louisiana in the name of good fun.
Or, at least try to.
