DONALDSONVILLE, La. (KPEL) -- A second explosion in as many days at a Louisiana chemical plant has killed one person, according to authorities on the scene.

The explosion at CF Industries in Donaldsonville killed one person and injured several others, according to Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley.

The CF Industries nitrogen plant is only miles away from a chemical plant in Geismar that exploded Thursday, killing two people and injuring dozens more.

Louisiana State Police Capt. Doug Cain said one person was taken by helicopter to a local hospital and several others were being treated for injuries.

Baton Rouge television station WBRZ reported workers at the plant pumped too much nitrogen into an 18-wheeler, which caused it to rupture.

According to nola.com, the explosion was reported at 6:27 p.m. Friday.

A fire sparked by the explosion was quickly extinguished, Cain said.

CF Industries' website says the plant can produce roughly 5 million tons of nitrogen for agricultural and industrial uses annually.
