According to a report from NFL media insider Ian Rapoport, the New Orleans Saints are releasing running back Darren Sproles.

The news comes on the same day the Saints released veteran wide receiver Lance Moore.

Sproles has been a giant part of the Saints offense the last 3 seasons (he joined the team in 2011), touching the ball 165 times in 2013. He was fourth on the team in receptions with 71. He carried the ball 53 times, and accumulated 41 kick/punt returns.

Although New Orleans will save $3.5 million in cap space, the move is a surprising one, considering how integral Sproles has been to the Saints offense.

News surfaced yesterday that the Saints were open to trading Lance Moore, Darren Sproles, and Pierre Thomas. One day later Moore and Sproles have both been released. Will Pierre Thomas be next?

Stay tuned.
