Rick Moranis Will Return for Netflix’s ‘SCTV’ Reunion
The Rick Moranis comeback tour continues. Just days after the Spaceballs star came out of retirement to reprise his role for The Goldbergs, Netflix confirms the SCTV comic legend will return for Netflix’s upcoming reunion special directed by Martin Scorsese.
Moranis wasn’t listed among the original announcement, which otherwise confirmed the reunion of Canadian cast faves Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short and Moranis’ frequent onscreen partner Dave Thomas. Shooting this Sunday at Toronto’s historic Elgin Theatre, the untitled special will feature Jimmy Kimmel moderating as Scorsese directs. An Afternoon With SCTV will also involve a live studio audience, as “the filming will be part of the Netflix special.”
The original SCTV ran for six seasons between 1976 and 1984, and also featured such comedy icons as the late John Candy and Harold Ramis. Much of the original cast went on to Hollywood, and cast members like Martin Short even brought some of his characters to SNL. The new special will also be produced by SCTV alum Andrew Alexander of Second City, Emma Tillinger Koskoff of Sikelia Productions and Lindsay Cox of Insight Productions.
For his part, Moranis last acted onscreen in 1997’s Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves, and famously left the acting world to focus on his family. The reclusive actor did reprise his Second City role as Canadian doofus Bob McKenzie for a benefit last year, but has otherwise expressed no plans to return to acting full-time.
We’re here for the Moranissance either way, so stay tuned for more on the SCTV reunion.
