Rare Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana + Pearl Jam Concert Poster Makes Its Way to eBay

A poster advertising a New Years Eve 1991 concert featuring three of the most important bands of the 1990s — the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana and Pearl Jam — recently sold for $149.99 via auction on eBay.

The concert at San Francisco’s Cow Palace was presented by legendary promoter Bill Graham, so the poster, designed by Harry Rossit, incorporates some of the psychedelic touches found in the artwork for his famous shows at the Fillmore. Here, a monster salivates over the red chili in his hand against a red and orange background.  Neither the monster’s head nor his hand is connected to his body.

At the time of the concert, the Chili Peppers were beginning their rise to global stardom following the release of ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik’ earlier that year. The album reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and spawned four hit singles, ‘Give It Away,’ ‘Under the Bridge,’ ‘Breaking the Girl’ and ‘Suck My Kiss.’ It has, to date, sold more than 7 million copies in America.

However, it was Nirvana that were about to eclipse the headliners. Their major label debut, ‘Nevermind,’ had been released that September (coincidentally, the same day as ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik’) and was two weeks away from reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It has sold over 30 million copies worldwide.

Pearl Jam had also released their debut, ‘Ten,’ but it had yet to gain traction with fans. But by the end of the year, it would have three hit singles, ‘Alive,’ ‘Even Flow’ and ‘Jeremy’ that are still radio staples today. ‘Ten’ has sold 10 million copies in America.

The 13″ x 19″ poster was listed a being in “absolutely flawless, gem mint condition.”
