Almost one month removed from the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, the debate continues over the induction of revolutionary hip-hop icons N.W.A. KISS' Gene Simmons has been the most outspoken critic, exchanging words back and forth with the group's members. Now, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello has thrown his hat into the ring after watching the broadcast of the ceremony on HBO on Saturday (April 30).

Morello's opinion is dually interesting as he's a major KISS fan who inducted the band into the Rock Hall in 2014. However, Rage Against the Machine have straddled the line between rock and rap. Taking to Twitter (seen below), the icon backed N.W.A. and called their segment "the most rock 'n' roll" of any at this year's ceremony.

Prior to N.W.A.'s induction, Gene Simmons told Rolling Stone he is "looking forward to the death of rap," adding, "Rap will die. Next year, 10 years from now, at some point and then something else will come along. And all that is good and healthy.” MC Ren of N.W.A. called out Simmons during his acceptance speech, saying, “I want to say to Mr. Gene Simmons that hip-hop is here forever — get used to it." Up next at the mic was Ice Cube, who echoed these sentiments, exclaiming, "The question is, ‘Are we rock ‘n’ roll?’ and I say ‘You g–damn right we rock ‘n’ roll!’ Rock ‘n’ roll is not an instrument — rock ‘n’ roll is not even a style of music. Rock ‘n’ roll is a spirit! A spirit that’s been going since the blues, jazz, bebop, soul, R&B, rock ‘n’ roll, heavy metal, punk rock, and, yes, hip-hop!”

Simmons then fired back with a tweet that said, “Respectfully– let me know when Jimi Hendrix gets into the hip hop hall of fame. Then you’ll have a point.” The war of words continued over the weekend when MC Ren took aim at not only Simmons, but all of KISS when he told Rolling Stone, “Who is he to say anything if he’s wearing makeup and heels and sticking out his tongue every 10 seconds of his show? Come on, man, that’s a gimmick.”

Ren went on to add, "‘F–k tha Police’ is way more rock & roll than ‘I want to rock ‘n’ roll all night and party every day.’ Come on, man," and concluded, “Hip-hop is here to stay, man. For real. You need to just get used to that. He don’t have a choice, man. And they ain’t gonna kick us out of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because he says so. You don’t own the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”

While the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has come under fire mainly for its exclusions, the battle rages on on the other side of the fence as well. Something tells us this isn't over yet.
