Hemp is a cannabis. The variety Levi Strauss is incorporating into their famous jeans isn't the kind that gets you high. That's Cannabis Sativa. The industrial variety of hemp lacks the THC content that gives you a "buzz". It was used extensively in textiles and paper before it was outlawed about 80 years ago. Congress legalized its cultivation last December. Levi's jeans have long been famous for their rugged durability. Hemp is sturdier than cotton, and for more economical to produce. It requires only about 1/10th the amount of water needed by cotton.Hemp yields about twice as much fiber per acre. The downside? It's a bit coarse, making hemp less comfortable to wear. New Levi's jeans will be 70% cotton, 30% hemp, for now. Don't try smoking them!
