Metairie Bar Patrons Disarm Man After He Fires Shots
METAIRIE, La. (AP) - The Jefferson Parish Sheriff says patrons in a suburban New Orleans bar overpowered and disarmed a gunman who had fired several shots and was carrying a rifle and two handguns.
Sheriff Newell Normand says nobody was hurt. He says 52-year-old Edward Schlumbrecht of Metairie apparently was angry with a neighbor who was in the Turtle Lounge early Saturday.
A news release says Schlumbrecht was booked with attempted murder, false imprisonment, aggravated assault, and two weapons charges.
Sheriff's spokesman John Fortunato says some of the 18 patrons escaped from the lounge. He says that, as the SWAT team assembled outside, a patron inside jumped on the gunman and took his AK-47, and other patrons took the handguns.
Schlumbrecht's attorney could not be reached for comment. Fortunato says he does not know who's representing Schlumbrecht.
