When I was a kid, my family spent summers at our camp in the Adirondacks. I went weeks on end without wearing "real" shoes. My standard footwear was flip-flops. That may not have been the best idea. In my old age, I'm dealing with a lot of discomfort in my feet, ankles, and legs. WXYZ in Detroit reports that wearing flip - flops can be damaging to your feet. A Michigan foot and ankle surgeon warns they can be quite injurious.

"Planter fasciitis, or heel pain, we can see pain in the arch. Tendinitis, stress fractures and shin splits....Trips and falls, strains and sprains broken bones and things like that."  - Dr. Zachary Vaupel

He believes they can be especially harmful for children, adding they're not appropriate for an active lifestyle because flip - flops offer little to no arch, instep, or ankle support. I guess you could always wear sneakers. I still prefer sandals when I'm poolside, or at the beach. Walking around in sneakers with sand in them kinda sucks.
