Mardi Gras Barricade Schedule For Lafayette

Thursday morning, Public Works crews in Lafayette began arranging barricades again for the next round of parades this upcoming Mardi Gras weekend. These were arranged in the streets at the start of the parade route beginning at the intersection of Simcoe and Surrey Streets, then along the parade route to the intersection of Johnston and Vermilion Streets.

Drivers are asked to avoid roads along the parade route both Thursday and Friday. On Saturday, the Children's Parade rolls at 12:30; Krewe of Bonaparte rolls Saturday night at 6:30, then the Queen's Parade happens at 6 p.m. on Lundi Gras.

In addition to the work Thursday morning, crew members will be on the streets Friday at 8 a.m. placing barricades to allow for "turning lanes" and major cross-overs along Johnston St. and N. College Rd.

The City of Lafayette barricade placement and parade schedule for Feb. 28- Mar. 5 is as follows:

Friday, March 1

- Public Works crews will place barricades to reduce driving lanes along the parade route at the following intersections:

• Bertrand and Reinhardt Drives
• Johnston Street at S. College Road in front of Twins
• S. College Road at Johnston Street on the side of Exxon
• Johnston Street at Cajundome Boulevard
• Johnston and Clinton Streets

Saturday, Mar. 2, 12:30 p.m. – The Children’s Parade is scheduled to roll from the intersection of Lafayette and W. Vermilion Streets to Cajundome Blvd. 

• Public Works crews will immediately follow the last float, cleaning up litter and debris along the entire parade route. Public Works crews will NOT move the barricades to the sides of the roads and the barricades will remain in place.

Monday, Mar. 4, 6 p.m. – Queen Evangeline’s Parade is scheduled to roll beginning at the intersection of Simcoe and Surrey Streets, then along the parade route before turning into Cajun Field at Gate 1.

Tuesday, Mar. 5, MARDI GRAS DAY – All streets on and around the parade route will be closed one hour before the parades begin and will remain closed until the completion of the last parade. No streets will be open until all citizens have been removed from the area and vehicles are able to travel safely.

• 10 a.m. – King Gabriel’s Parade is scheduled to roll beginning at the intersection of Simcoe and Surrey Streets, then along the parade route before turning into Cajun Field at Gate 1.
• 1 p.m. – The Lafayette Mardi Gras Festival Parade is scheduled to roll following King Gabriel’s Parade.
• 2:30 p.m. – The TownSquare Media Independent Parade is scheduled to roll following the Lafayette Mardi Gras Festival Parade.

Immediately following the last float of the last parade, Public Works crews will remove the barricades at all intersections.

11 p.m. until, Public Works crews will move all remaining barricades to the sides of the roads and clean up litter and debris along the entire parade route. Motorists are asked to use alternate routes when possible, allow extra time to get to their destinations and exercise additional caution and patience while cleanup crews and public safety officers are on the roadways.

The Lafayette Police Department will close all streets on and around the parade route one hour before the parades begin. All streets will remain closed until the completion of the last parade. No streets will be open until all citizens have been removed from the area and vehicles are able to travel safely. Public Works crews will follow the last float of the parade, cleaning up litter and debris along the entire parade route.

Handicap Viewing – The Lafayette Police Command Post at the corner of St. Julien and Johnston Streets, in front of Fire Station #5 is designated as handicap viewing.

Wednesday, Mar. 6 – Public Works crews will not be working on the roadways.

Thursday, Mar. 7 and Friday, Mar. 8, 7 a.m. – Public Works crews will remove barricades from the Mardi Gras route and return them to the Public Works yard on Dorset Ave.
