My vehicle registration renewal notice arrived in the mail recently, and it directed me to the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections Office of Motor Vehicles website.

I have to say that the Expresslane online renewal was easy-peasy lemon-squeezy! In less than 5 minutes my information was taken, approved, payment made and was assured that my new registration would arrive within a few weeks!

I found the website to be very thorough (though I don't drive for a living, so I don't know how well it serves commercial drivers), and once I started snooping around I found loads of useful information, from driver's license renewal to specialty plates, vehicle registration information to insurance information, even driving records.

I have nothing against visiting the "DMV" (it's actually "OMV", but many here still call it the "DMV"), especially the office in Abbeville (those ladies are awesome), but I do understand why some people shy away from that experience. (I once had a friend describe her trip to the OMV as "similar to going to Walmart, but worse".)

If you do find yourself going to the OMV, here are a few pointers:

  1. Have your information ready.
  2. Visit the LDPSC/Office of Motor Vehicles website for prior to heading to the OMV. That website can answer many of your questions, and you can perform many renewals/applications online, possibly reducing your time in the physical OMV or eliminating your trip there altogether!
  3. Be nice. When you go into the office, act like the person sitting in front of you is a mirror, and then treat them accordingly. You'll be surprised at how much of your attitude will reflect back to you.

That's it for the pointers. Seriously. Have your paperwork (or questions) in order, and be nice.
