As of today, the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles will no longer accept cash as payment. They will now only take credit or debit cards, checks, money orders or cashier checks.

OMV Commissioner Karen St. Germain said that this new police will save the OMV money because it costs money to handle cash. It will save the OMV nearly a half a million dollars by having customers paying electronically. It also makes the OMV employees more stressed to handle so much cash.

St. Germain said:

It’s really become a burden. Our employees are responsible for the cash they take in and they’re also responsible if they’re short.
