Louisiana Man Receives Stimulus Check, Even Though He’s Been Dead Since 2018

Everybody is getting a stimulus check, even dead people.

A St. John the Baptist Parish man named Hewitt Robert received a CARES Act stimulus payment last week. However, he's been gone since September 29, 2018.

His daughter Loretta Webre noticed the money in her late father's checking account. (Not exactly sure why he still has an open account, but that's a question for another day.)

“When I looked the other day for my stimulus, I noticed his account had more than I remembered having. And when I checked, his stimulus was there and mine wasn't,” Webre told WWL TV in New Orleans.

She says she filled out tax forms for her 90-year-old father the year he died, checking off a box on the form stating that she was filing for someone who was deceased. That made her wonder why the IRS would mistake her father for a legit recipient.

“I know it's not mine and I know I'm not gonna spend it. What bothers me is how many other people are out there who have gotten money for their deceased relatives and are not gonna be honest about it and how many other people are gonna lose out because of that,” Webre said.

The IRS and U.S. Department of Treasury have yet to respond to media requests for comment on stimulus checks that have gone to deceased people.

Many of the payments reportedly made to deceased Americans were made to those who have passed away in the last two years.
