The above photo of Poor Boy's Riverside Inn was taken during the historic flood of 1940.The flooding that hit Louisiana this weekend appears to be the worst since. In early August, 1940 a tropical depression formed off the Florida coast, moving westward across the Gulf of Mexico. By the time it reached the Mississippi / Louisiana coast the storm had reached hurricane strength, packing winds of 100 MPH. It brought devastating floods to the Bayou State. Seven people lost their lives. The hurricane did $10.75 million worth of damage. Should that sum seem small compared to more recent disasters, keep in mind that was 1940. We won't have a thorough assessment of the damage from this weather system for a while. Governor John Bel Edwards warned citizens Sunday morning, it's not over yet. More rain is forecast through the coming week. As of Sunday morning, 3 deaths had been reported. Please be careful! We don't want that total to climb.
