Could Lafayette Be The Next To Ban Smoking In Bars? | Lafayette Live
The New Orleans smoking ban made national headlines. Could Lafayette be next?
Lafayette Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux announced in a press conference Wednesday his plan to introduce an ordinance that would ban smoking in Lafayette bars. City-Parish President Joey Durel joined ‘Nathan and Bernie in the Morning‘ for his weekly ‘Lafayette Live‘ segment to discuss this ordinance and how he thinks it will play out in the community.
"It will be an interesting conversation," said Durel. "I think most of the bars will say things publicly and some will say things behind the scenes."
Though the ordinance as described by Councilman Boudreaux would ban smoking in bars throughout Lafayette, all eyes will surely be pointed to Councilman Brandon Shelvin whose district includes the many bars and clubs of downtown Lafayette.
He’s one ninth of that council, but I’m sure his vote will carry a little weight if he comes back and says his constituents want to ban it or keep it. - Joey Durel
