Imagine your monthly water bill normally runs around $40 to $50, but you open your bill and it says you now owe $4,000. Now imagine calling the city to let them know there's obviously a mistake with your water bill, and you're told the bill is actually correct, and that's what you owe. This is exactly what is happening to folks in Jeanerette.

Apparently, there has been an ongoing mistake with meter readings going all the way back to 2013.

The city is offering customers the option to pay in installments, but with such large bills, it's still not going to make things easy.

Mandy Robinson tells KATC "It's not my fault. I don't read the meter. When it's time for me to pay my bill, I pay my bill. If you can't pay your bill, you get turned off."

KATC was able to get into the mayor's office, but she said she was not ready to comment.
