MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KPEL News) - A suspect wanted for the Mardi Gras day mass shooting in Mamou, Louisiana has been captured in Texas, authorities say.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Department announced the capture on social media, with the 19-year-old suspect awaiting extradition back to Louisiana.

Arrest in Texas

"A dangerous fugitive responsible for a deadly mass shooting that claimed multiple lives and injured several others is now behind bars, thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of law enforcement," the sheriff's department announced on Facebook.

A coordinated effort involving the sheriff's office and U.S. Marshals led to the arrest of Trea’land Ty’rell Castille, who is 19 years old.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office also noted that Castille was charged with multiple serious crimes.

  • 2 counts First Degree Murder
  • 10 counts Attempted Second Degree Murder
  • 5 counts of Aggravated Assault with a Firearm

The Mardi Gras Shooting

During Tuesday's Mardi Gras celebration in Mamou, a gunman opened fire on a crowd gathered for a performance by artist Chris Ardoin. Video from the shooting went viral, with social media horrified at the scene.

Rapid fire gunshots could be heard in the video.

After the shooting, one person of interest was taken into custody and a massive manhunt was launched to find the shooter.

There is currently no bond information or a timeline on Castille's extradition to Louisiana.
