It's flu and cold season across the country, and now one school in Lafayette Parish announced a flu outbreak amongst many of its students.

Parents with kids at David Thibodeaux STEM Academy received an email Thursday afternoon alerting them of a flu outbreak at the school. Parents are reminded to instruct their kids to wash or sanitize their hands throughout the day, and if kids are sick they should stay home.

On a private Facebook page hosted by parents, many highlighted that students in the 9th grade were infected with the contagious virus.

Again, if your child is showing any signs or symptoms of feeling ill, school administrators highly encourage them to stay home and check for homework on the school portal.

While it was announced by David Thibodeaux STEM Academy that many of their students are infected with the flu, parents with kids at other schools have announced that their kids are sick, so it is not just sweeping through this school.

If your child appears to be sick with the flu the CDC says:

"Studies show that flu antiviral drugs work best for treatment when they are started within 2 days of getting sick, but starting them later can still be helpful, especially if the sick person is at higher risk of severe flu illness or is very sick from flu."

Flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people also may have vomiting and diarrhea. People may be infected with influenza virus and have respiratory symptoms without a fever.

Here are ways you can treat someone with the flu (Source, CDC):

  • Be sure they stay hydrated
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Treat fever and aches with over-the-counter medicine
  • Consider getting a prescription for anti-viral medicine
  • Take cough suppressants to soothe a cough
  • Use a humidifier to ease nasal congestion and sore throat
  • Stay Home, and help prevent the spread
