Louisiana Tragedy: Grandparents of Bourbon Street Victim Killed by Impaired Driver
A family already dealing with unthinkable loss is facing another devastating tragedy after a deadly crash in Gretna over the weekend. On Saturday night, 76-year-old Hubert Gauthreaux and his wife, 73-year-old Victoria Gauthreaux, were killed when an allegedly impaired driver slammed into their parked vehicle. The couple were the grandparents of Hubert Gauthreaux III, the 21-year-old Archbishop Shaw graduate killed in the Bourbon Street terror attack on New Year’s Day.
According to FOX 8, the crash happened just after 6:30 p.m. on Fourth Street. According to investigators with the Gretna Police Department, Stephan Juarez, 33, was driving a GMC truck at high speed when he crossed into oncoming traffic, hitting multiple vehicles before crashing into the Gauthreauxs’ parked Volvo. Victoria was sitting in the back seat, and Hubert had stepped out of the car. Both were rushed to University Medical Center, where they passed away from their injuries.
Juarez, who police say had marijuana in his possession and was driving under the influence, suffered minor injuries. He’s now facing a long list of charges, including vehicular homicide, reckless driving, and DWI.
This loss is especially heartbreaking for the Gauthreaux family. Just over a month ago, their grandson Hubert III was killed in a domestic terror attack on Bourbon Street when a driver intentionally plowed through a crowd of people.
“This is a pain no family should have to endure,” said Gretna Mayor Belinda Constant. “The Gauthreaux family has been through so much already. Our entire community is holding them close in our hearts.”
Witnesses described Saturday’s crash scene as chaotic and horrific, with debris scattered everywhere.
The crash is still under investigation, but our condolences are with the Gauthreaux family and their loved ones. See the full story here via FOX 8.
