LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL News) - A drug commonly used for the treatment of COVID-19 is currently under a nationwide recall, and Louisiana patients may want to be careful with their injections.

Veklury, better known as remdesivir, is a Gilead product, but according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there have been complaints about glass particles found in the 100 mg vials of the drug.

According to the FDA, injecting a product contaminated with glass particles can cause localized irritation or swelling as the body reacts to the foreign material. More concerning, however, is the potential for these tiny glass fragments to enter the bloodstream, where they can travel to vital organs such as the heart, lungs, or brain.

This can lead to dangerous blockages in blood vessels, significantly raising the risk of severe complications, including stroke or even death. Despite the seriousness of this issue, the FDA says, Gilead has announced that, as of now, no reports of adverse effects have been linked to this recall.
