A Lafayette Police Department motorcycle officer was seriously injured on Wednesday night (7/31), when he was struck from behind by a vehicle while conducting an escort near the entrance ramp onto I-49 at Gloria Switch Road.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:17 p.m. when the officer was in the process of blocking the entrance ramp to facilitate a safe passage. The driver, suspected of being impaired, collided with the officer, causing significant injury. Following the crash, the driver attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended shortly thereafter.

The injured officer was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he is currently in stable but serious condition. The driver was taken into custody and subjected to further testing at LPD headquarters. Initial investigations revealed signs of impairment, leading to the driver's subsequent charges.

In an official update, authorities confirmed that the Louisiana State Police will be leading the investigation into the incident. The driver now faces multiple charges, including operating a vehicle while intoxicated (first offense), felony hit-and-run driving, first-degree vehicular negligent injuring, and careless operation.

The Lafayette Police Department is working closely with the Louisiana State Police to ensure a thorough investigation.
