A Breaux Bridge man and a Bunkie man were killed in a two-vehicle crash in Avoyelles Parish on the Fourth of July.

According to Louisiana State Police Troop E, the collision happened on Hwy 29 near Overby Road near Bunkie at around 1:30 am.

The crash killed Robert Johnson, 75, of Breaux Bridge, and Shepherd Roy Jr., 63, of Bunkie.

Authorities said Roy was driving a 2001 GMC Sierra northbound on the highway when, for still-to-be-determined reasons, the vehicle crossed the center line into the southbound lane and crashed head-on with a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado that Johnson was driving.

Both men were pronounced dead on the scene, according to State Police.

Neither were wearing seatbelts.

Investigators said impairment may be a contributing factor in this incident. Toxicology samples were taken for analysis.
